The distillery opened in 1881 on the Isle of Isla on the northern shore of the island where for many years the distillery was owned and operated by Highland Distillers who were renowned for "The Famous Grouse" blend. This familiar blended whisky used a blend of mainland malts and locally produced single malt whiskies from Isla. The distillery was sold to Burns Stewart in May 2003. The name Bunnahabhain means "Mouth of the River" and Bunnahabhain single malt whisky also contributes to Cutty Sark and Black Bottle blended whiskies.
