Bruichladdich Distillery (BREW-ICH-LADDY)
Bruichladdich is Scotland's most westerly distillery. It is said to be the lightest and least typical of the Islay malts but I think it's a toss up between Bruichladdich and Bunnahabhain; but that's just me. Either way it's an excellent dram and one which makes for an ideal transition from mainland malts to the Islay or Island whiskies.
Opened by the three Gourlay brothers in 1881 the distillery has had its fair share of closures and re-opening's and after periods of ownership by Invergordon, Whyte & Mackay & Jim Beam, the distillery was purchased on the 19th of December 2000 by a group of private investors led by Mark Reynier and is currently producing some innovative and very tasty expressions led by Master Distiller, Jim McEwan.
